Quilting Tips
- This is a great way to use up fabric scraps, but it is best all fabrics used have a similar weight and fiber content.
- If you are color blocking, take a photo of the final layout prior to stitching quilt pieces together.
- If you are working in a team, allocate one person to stitch the quilted fabric. This will ensure seam allowance remains consistent.
- Create the end quilted fabric 3-5” larger than the actual pattern piece. For example, our Main Heart pattern piece with seam allowance has the dimensions of 21” x 20”; thus, the pre-cut quilted fabric should be approximately 26” x 25”.
- Avoid placing project seams or pivot points along quilted seams. At the upper heart's dip point, we should have offset this point from a quilted seam. This would have allowed us to clip the seam allowance with ease.
- After cutting out pattern pieces, immediately stay stitch around each quilted pattern piece to avoid quilted seams opening during construction.
- Create a backing/interlining when incorporating quilted fabric into a garment. This will keep the multitude of seam allowances in check.
